Today I attended hospital with my husband and daughter for my second trimester scan. Finally my question has been answered! Now is it a girl or a boy?

Second Baby Scan – 18 weeks 5 days

I can’t believe we’ve already arrived at the second trimester scan. Up until today I was pretty much convinced I knew what sex my baby is going to be, yet friends and family were unable to deliver a clear verdict on their declaration! Last night I even dreamt about my baby, adding more conviction to my suspicion.

The morning started well, we were up on time having had a good night’s sleep. Work on the final selection of SS2013 designs was shoe-horned into a shorter than normal work morning to compensate for time required to attend my appointment for my second pregnancy scan. So at 11.30 a.m. we hopped in the car, my daughter chirping away merrily in the back telling her best friend Adi Bunny that “We were going to hospital to see Mummy’s baby in her tummy!”

Arriving promptly we checked in at Xray reception and were asked to go through to the Foetal Medicine Department where we were to wait in the reception area to be called. When we arrived somebody had even put up a laminated sign on the wall. “Please sit here and wait to be called through for your scan”. Crikey! I’m impressed, two pieces of information that don’t contradict each other. For pregnancy scans we have to drink two pints of water half an hour before the scan to push the uterus into a good position for the ultrasound to pick up a good image of the foetus. Well, we sat, and we sat, and we sat and at around 20 minute intervals one by one the heavily pregnant ladies were called in with their partners.

Fit To Burst

By the time I had waited 50 minutes my bladder was like a basketball that had been inflated to twice the normal pressure. I wanted so desperately to visit the bathroom it hurt. What on earth was going on? How could they be this far behind knowing all of us were fit to burst! At an hour and a quarter I’d had enough. Then to top it all, a lady whose appointment scheduled twenty minutes after mine was called in! My blood started to boil and we leapt into action challenging the lady calling the appointments.

It turned out that we had been mis-informed and should have ignored our verbal instructions and the signage and checked in at an office next door, with no signs that it was even related to the waiting area! I was fuming, despite being told I could partially relieve myself, even that seemed a ridiculous idea! Empty half my bladder? I’m not a decanter of vintage port!

The Scan

After a mind blowing and bladder bursting one hour forty five minutes, we were finally called in having handed my notes over to an apologetic receptionist some ten minutes earlier. The lovely Dr Chissell and sonographer Miss Agnihotri greeted me warmly on entry with a big apology and an immediate offer that I could happily empty my bladder prior to the scan! Oh joy! But why on earth was I told to drink so much water if it wasn’t going to be an issue?

The moment of truth, the little one appeared on the screen and the sonographer started doing all the usual measurements, head circumference, length of fibia and many more. She then checked all the vitals of the organs, limbs and skeletal charactersistics and all was spot on. In fact Dr Chissell even told me that the risk of Down Syndrome had improved from 1 in 2200 to 1 in 4400, a very reassuring measurement. And finally to that question that had remained unanswered until today.

“Adriana, I’m happy to tell you, you are having a boy!!!!”

Yes! We are going to have Alexander in August just a week before Zoe’s third birthday! The dream of Zoe and Alexander is becoming a reality.
