Now that I have entered my third trimester the realisation of the arrival of my second child is growing rapidly by the day. Preparing a toddler for a new baby comes with its own complexities and we know we want to make it as smooth a transition as possible!
Preparing your toddler for the arrival of a new sibling
When we asked our daughter Zoe what she wanted, she was adamant she wanted a “yittawl sister!” Of course following the second pregnancy scan we had to break the news to her that in fact she was going to have a little brother, whose name we had decided was to be Alexander (pronounced Ai-yix by Zoe!).
Amazingly she took the news well and proceeded to tell us that “Ai-yix” would have “bwown hair like Mummy” and “bwown eyes like Mummy”, a positive start to the new challenge! As the visits to Cathy our lovely midwife have progressed, Zoe has become more curious about “Ai-yix”, listening to his heartbeat on the ultrasound, watching Mummy’s tummy being prodded and pushed and measured by Cathy, even venturing to tell us that “Ai-yix is living in Zoe’s old house, in Mummy’s tummy!” Now we have to prepare her for Alex’s arrival.
The news so far
So, to date we have encouraged Zoe to interact with her younger brother through her senses, touching Mummy’s tummy, feeling “Ai-yix moving”, giving Mummy’s tummy a big kiss, to say goodnight to Alexander to name a few! We have involved her when choosing some of Alex’s new wardrobe, getting her take on colours and designs of baby clothes, after all she is already choosing her own outfits!
